The "java.io.IOException: Unable to post messages: Service Unavailable (503) Connection threshold has been reached." is seen in either process reporting or in the atom logs.
The "java.io.IOException: Unable to post messages: Service Unavailable (503) Connection threshold has been reached." is seen when the atom is unable to post process metadata to the platform so that it can be displayed in the process reporting window.

It is normal to see this message in the atoms container log. It is a temporary situation that will clear up once the data is able to get posted.

This error may also be preceeded by an attempt number.  For example:

…/account/accounts-id/solr/update Attempt: ##]: Hit retry loop. Executing backoff strategy.
java.io.IOException: Unable to post messages: Service Unavailable (503) Connection threshold has been reached.

As the # of attempts increases, the time between attempts also increases and the delay may increase.  This is to allow for the load to lessen so that the requests can be accepted a smaller amount of time later.

Please note that during this time, as long as the atom is continuing to run and the data is reaching the endpoints, the issue is most likely only temporarily delaying message traffic between the atom and the platform.

Typically the issue will correct itself and no action is needed on behalf of the user.

However, if the number of attempts continues to increase throughout the day and does not seem to reset itself, then this may indicate an more severe communication issue on either the atom side or the platform side...  If that is the case, please check trust.boomi.com for any performance issues.  If none exists, please try restarting the machine hosting the atom or the network router connected to the machine.  If the issue still does not resolve itself after these steps have been performed, please contact Dell Boomi Support to report the issue and we will help investigate further.
