A locally installed atom will auto update on release date, provided that the atom is on line at that time. The auto release works as follows: the atom will check with the platform to see if a release is available, if it is, it will request that the update be downloaded.
Two weeks prior to a release, you have the ability to pull pending updates down to the atom. (Release Control). This provides the opportunity to apply the updates according to your maintenance schedule, and also allows you to download the updates to a test atom to ensure that you do not encounter any issues prior to the release.
If you do not use the Release Control functionality, the release will automatically be applied to your atom on the scheduled release date.
