If you check the "Return HTTP Responses" flag on an HTTP client connector, you can then use the standard document properties to query the response...  you can use this in a decision shape, or even in a message shape for example.

 

If that field is checked, and if no documents are returned by the connector, you may get a single zero length file returned to the process.
