How exactly does the 'LIKE' query filter operator work?

Aside from mentioning that the 'LIKE' operator exists the documentation does not get into the specifics how how it works nor does it provide any examples. I've tried querying Atom and Environment objects based on their names using the 'LIKE' operator and it _almost_ never returns any results. I have tried basic wildcard searches, regular expressions, and simple partial words - in every case no results were returned. The only time a query using the 'LIKE' operator ever returns any results is if I pass in an argument that exactly matches. The 'LIKE' operator seems to be a synonym for the 'EQUALS' operator.
