The map function caching puts the map function contents in a cache so it can be used repetitively in the process. A common use for this is storing a login key value.
Map Caching is purely for the performance improvement of the map. Because this is a map performance issue, we recommend testing with both options (by map and by document) to determine which will have the best performance for your integration. Caching by map will cache the function data for everything sent to the map shape while caching by document will cache function data for an individual document.

Enabling map function caching saves operations such as database or connector calls from being re-executed.

Please note that map function caching by document is not the same as Document Caching.
