Checking for null dates in Salesforce

I have the situation where a new custom field was created in the Contact table.  It is a date/time field and I need to see if it has been updated.  I am having a problem with this as apparently it's Not Null but I don't know what it is.  The formatted XML comes back like



I am using a decision box looking like


Type: Profile Element
Profile Type: XML
Element: LastUpdate__c

Equal to  (I've also tried Not Equal to)
Static Value: Null   ( I have tried several variations of this with no luck)


It is a date/time field.  Do I need to have an initial value set or something?
