Why are my database fields that can be NULL being set to spaces (instead of left as NULL) when the input side has no data?

I am inserting records into 4 database tables.  Many of the fields are defined as allowing NULL.  Let's say one field is char(10).  If my inbound side is NULL, when inserting into the field, instead of getting NULL in  that column, I have 10 spaces.  In Boomi 3.3, the colulm is NULL.  Is there a setting to handle this, or is this how Atomsphere will always work?  Technically, 10 spaces is not the same as NULL.
